Some of you know I have been working on building a open source CNC router. Well, I finally managed to get a bug out of the configuration and software and I have it working now. I have been playing around making test cuts etc. I also have been learning how to import artwork into the software and converting it to cut. Tonight I made a test cut of the Aquasport logo in some MDF. It's small so some of the detail could not be cut since the bit is too large. But the concept works well:

I hope to try some starboard next!

Bruce did you work along the lines of a shopbot and home build the whole thing? I do not recall.. (Been lusting after one of those for while now..)

Bruce is your software allowing you to take into account your bit size? you might want to try a box around the design thats .25" deep and then the aquasport on top of it. instead of cutting out the aquasport cut out the material around it. All and all though not bad at all..

Yes you do that in the cam software that generates the Gcode that is sent to the machine. You set the tool diameter, total cut depth, overlap, depth of each pass cut, feed rate, etc etc. In this case I was using a 1.5MM bit. Right now I'm just making practice cuts to learn the software, best feed rates etc. Learning another cad program to convert raster art into vector art and what kind of results I can get. So far I'm really happy with it. The logo I did there was an engraving cut. To make an actual badge will take more work and steps. I plan on trying some Starboard over the weekend.

Dave, I built the OX Cnc with is an open source design (everyone shares their designs and software for free) that is a beefed version of the Routy. I sourced my parts from several sources and I even 3D printed some of them on my 3D printer. Here is a link to the design with build sheets BOM and everything: http://www.openbuilds.com/builds/openbu ... chine.341/ There are some places that sell it in complete kit for though. Of course there are other similar designs out there. If you want to build a machine just let me know.

Man that hurts my brain. Makes me remember when I use to work for a living. I did the first cad to cam design for the company I worked for. sCo_hmmthink :1898_: but Bruce that looks really good. Now get that going good and let me know when your ready to do alium or sst. I'll send you some end mills. I have a bunch from work I was given by the machinists when I retired. :605_thumbs_up:
