I picked up an original 1971 Flatback. It has the usual transom issues and a spongy deck just in front of the console. She looked good at first glance.

Casting deck

1 thing that should be noted was the 19-1 and the 22-2 shared a casting deck. On the Osprey and the 22-2 they put a panel up to fill in the area of the rear casting deck for storage. For the Gull the used a different console and removed the hatch and side plate for gas tank placement. Pretty cool idea. You can see it here in this photo

Well, I sold the big trailer that was under this boat. I knew she was a little heavy and water logged but boy I had no idea. I took her for a ride to see how she handled. At speed she slid a little, but when I hit a chop no movement and just cut it like a hot knife through butter.
Went to move her to a 3500lb trailer. Had her 1/2 way on and rear trailer support was on the ground and the springs were at full compression. sSc_eek and all her fat azz wasn't even on the trailer yet.sSa_cry4

So my plan to run her as she was is now foiled. Out comes the saws and grinders. :1898_:

Cut the rear part of the deck off where the ski bracket was mounted, which was right above the center stringer.
Image

That stringer is full of water. There is also a plywood core in the deck.

Image
Photo under the casting deck showed it was full of foam, albet wet soggy nasty foam

No, it was over a few months, I'm working on three right now, plus the 19-6 that you want...It is here waiting for you.

I do a little on each. I am going to have all 3 sand blasted so I can do the glass work and not have to worry about grinding dust. I hate grinding.

Man I can't believe she was so damn heavy! Maybe you should name her the "Fat Back".

Looks like you've made some good progress. I also hate grinding... so much so that when my 19-6 came down with the mysterious lumpy skin disease, I opted to sell her vs grinding them out.

1/4" of standing water in a stringer, but more in others

Image

Each stringer took 4-5 bags of wet nasty foam to the dump

i highly recommend calling a mobile sand blaster, or take the boat to one, best $300 youll spend on demolition. gives the whole surface a nice good etch before glassing and you dont get all itchy
