I hear you Dav, I run into a few like that when I was with Sp-ops. But back in my old butts time, 1200 to1500 was normal for airborne jumps. My lowest jumps were at 900 to 1000. Guy's using the mc1 thru mc6 ram air chutes, that have been used in later years then my time, could and can make those low level jumps. We used the old t10 and I mean old we used Korean war era chutes. Their were times I would have loved to jump lower, but If you would have tried, you would become a smear on the tree tops sSc_eek . I hit to hard to many times to count. The mountainous jungles terrain were soooo irregular. When we could get low, I repeled from the h19 when ever I could. Those dam old h13s couldn't hover worth a dam so it was land with them, which made my day when ever I got to the lz and saw one sitting there waiting for me sFun_crazydance . OK Cory sorry for the derail but see what happens when you get old people like me thinking. sCo_hmmthink

Man had to get in and correct some of my spelling. :753_hammer_hitting_head:

We love a derail :1947_eating_popcorn: , hell it's mandatory after a few pages of stuff :1121_wink: . That's why this site rocks. We can do what we want and enjoy, laugh, and tell stories about things. No drama, unless someone runs out of the adult beverages and has to find the sober person to run to the store for more. stirthepot.gif

Derails are all part of the fun, without them life would be very boring.

OK since you guys don't mind a derail. I'll tell you a story. Now people that know me, know I don't like telling war stories and theirs not much that's funny in war. But once in a while something will strikes a funny bone. Not maybe right away but later when you tell others your serving with and they laugh like hell and as you get old like I am now. Things do bring a smile to your face. So here it is.

I was out on a weeks mission, doing a grid recon of a new area. Well as normal LT gave me a mountainous jungle area just to piss me off. It was my third day out, when I started up this slope. The bush was really thick, so like it or not I had to us the trail, which was a long switch back. It was like a snake going up hill. Well I was about 2 hundred yards up, when I hear talking. I couldn't make out what was being said because it wasn't English and it was far enough away just to put me on alert. So it sounded like they were coming my way, so I get down and start crawling up through this really thick ass bush. I know I crawled at least 75 to 100 feet when I could tell they were VC which were not suppose to be here. So I knew LT and me were going to have to have a talk when I get back about his Intel. So I stopped where I was and layed my xm21 along side and pulled out my 45 and my knife. This close up, they were better then my rifle. As I was laying there doing my breathing excersizes to slow my hart rate. I felt something heavy start crawling across my legs. Well you know your first reaction when you feel a snake going across your legs, IS TO GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE. But you can't.
So you hope he doesn't sense the heat you are now putting out like a blast furnace. So after he gets over me the voices are now getting louder. So you lay there knowing they can't see you as long as you don't move. But then you think of that dam cobra, and you hope he doesn't cross the path in front of these guys coming toward you. Because you know they will spray that snake and every bush around it as well as the ones you are hiding under. Well as luck has it the snake must have felt them coming and either changed his direction or stopped to let them walk by. So they start walking right in front of me. That's when I realized, I must have stopped only a few feet from the path. Well as they walk by you know they are combatants. Their spaced about 4 to 5 feet apart and carrying AK's. And your glade that there is no wind blowing. But as the third guy gets right in front of you, the SOB cuts a fart and in that thick heave air, it just lingers there. And I'm starting to turn green and thinking to myself, that SOB better take something to clean his self out sSa_cry4 . I know I wasn't the only one thinking the same thing, because his two friends, that were behind him, start to cuss him. Now what is interesting is, I couldn't understand what they were saying, but you can understand when they are cussing up a storm sSc_eek . Well I was never so glad to hear them fade away, so I could get up and get the hell out of that stink. So like I said, not much in war is funny, but just once in a while.

That is awesome. My father inlaw is a Green Beret. Was in Psy-Ops in Vietnam. He does not tell many stories, but the ones he does are like yours funny as hell. His are similar to what you said.

Oh and 1 more thing, thanks for your service.

Oh man....what a great story. I had a draft #, barely missed getting drafted senior year of high school, 1973.

Thank you for serving our country sHa_clap2

PS. Great job with the snake. I hate a damn snake. They lost their legs in Genesis for a reason. Otherwise they'd still be lizards.
