I haven't been able to get much done on my Aquasport 170 since i have been in. I have been working on my hydraulics for my work boat. So here is a little video for your entertainment from my first trip of the 2017 sea scallop season!!

That was terrific, thank you for posting it. Looks like dealing with those rocks is rough, definitely a good amount of time involved.

Were you pleased with the catch.....how many pounds cleaned is a good trip?

Thanks :605_thumbs_up:

Thanks Gran! Yeah dealing with those boulders is time consuming and even more time consuming and dangerous when we are dealing with the waves. On that particular day it was blowing 25-35 knots with seas 8' and up. Cameras don't do it justice! This trip we dealt with lots of high winds and seas plus 14 degree weather doesn't help. Makes for a miserable time for my guys out on the deck. Our calmest day was 10-15 knot winds and about worst was 35-40 knot winds ( 3 days straight) of that weather. In cold weather and heavy seas your catch is not as good. During the summer when we have the best weather and when we work the most. It is like a mirror out there. This trip our catch was on par for this time of the year. We had about 13K pounds for the 6 days we worked. Typical amounts during the summer when the scallops are more active and are bigger an average trip is anywhere from 25K pounds and up. And yes we have to cut every single scallop open to retrieve the scallop meat. Thanks a whole lot of cutting!!!!!

I like the name of your boat Miss Delmarva. That is actually an area here off the coast that we fish in!!!

Thanks Cap!

Yes that was a rough ride out, and the first couple of days were nasty looking too. 25K pounds a trip in the summer sounds like good money!

Yup. The pay is real good. But very dangerous work. I love what I do and consider myself to blessed where I only have to work about 3 months out of the year and have enough money to stay home the other 9 months of the year! We are highly regulated by NMFS ( part of NOAA) and we are watched by the Coast Guard as well. But I can't see myself doing anything else. A few more years and I will be living the retired life and passing my Captains duties on to another younger family member!!!

Scott.. No problem with sharing. I do a lot of videos on the boat with my Go Pro's. At the end of the year I make a DVD for my guys to take home and show their families what they do to make money. As for depth it varies anywhere from 17-40 fathoms (102-240 feet). So there is no diving for these things. What you guys are getting is probably bay scallop or calico scallops. These are sea scallop. Ranging in size anywhere from a U10 to 20/30's. Meaning Under 10 to a pound or 20/30 to a pound. We are usually gone about 10 days depending on the area we go to. If we go to a closed area for scallops usually 5-6 days and you have your quota of 18,000 lbs caught!

Boys chase the links and watch those guys cut sSc_eek ... Cap was cutting at about 1 every 4 seconds. At 20 to a pound, 18k pounds, that's 360K scallops at a pace of 1 in 4 seconds, that's 400 MAN HOURS of cutting if my math is right... DAMN MAN!!!! :2403_worshipper: :2403_worshipper:

I have video of the guys cutting. I will post up for you to see my machines cutting them open. It's a tough life but rewarding come payday!!! That's why I tell my son to stay in school and get his degree. Doesn't want to be out here in January when it's 10 degrees, blowing 40 knot winds and 15 foot seas... But I will take him one trip this summer just to show him what his dad goes thru to pay for his education!!!!!
