Typed the reply but when tried to post...the post went poof. So what the heck, here's the reply :605_thumbs_up:

The old standby for local KM live bait fishing is 20 pound test mono. But we run topwater reels spooled with 15 or 17 and the downrigger rods with 20. The lighter line in theory offers less drag on the bait, a more natural presentation. Also on the topwater rods, go with hi-vis line. Dayglo green or gold. Then a thirty foot topshot of clear, keep the color away from the baits. Boats here run straight clear on the downrigger rods. If you'd like to get a bait subsurface, use a pinch-on weight a foot or two in front of the rig, fish it off the transom in the propwash.

You can use PLINE as a topshot instead of the clear mono....but wouldn't spool with it. The knock on flouro is it becomes hard and brittle with age.

For your bottom stuff go with 4/0's on stiff trolling rods...the king rods have too much action and are meant to be forgiving on the strike with light/moderate drag. Don't buy the bottomfishing stuff new, those old Penn's last forever, you can find them for cheap on Craig's.

I love high vis stuff as I have a hard time finding line against the water.

What knot do you join these lines with, I know there are many possibilities but what is your preference?

Jon, I use the uni knot for pretty much everything....it is strong. Practice tying the uni knot, then for joining lines, the double uni knot. It also works great for lines of different tests/diameters. It isn't mentioned in the diagram, but to complete the knot, moisten the two lines in the middle as you slowly pull them apart. I just put the knot in my mouth, then pull

Thanks Scotty!
