Scotty,

I've had GREAT results with the Gam SS-2. They are hand made and hand tuned in Maine. You'll need the adapter mount so you can mount it on a standard antenna mount. If you plan on mounting it on an extension you want the bottom exit mount. If not get the side exit mount.

Thanks Bruce!

I have a Shakespeare that we installed when Bob rigged her, that antenna has a short in it. Sometimes it transmits, other times not, sometimes the transmission is garbled.

Looking at the link you supplied, guess I need the model "Marine VHF" then the adapter....did you order direct from them? Tx bud!

I bought both of mine from Defender.

On my 245 I have the thru the bottom adapter and a standard stainless 4' VHF extension. This gives me an 8' antenna. On the low power setting I was able to reach the sea tow automated radio check in south east St Pete from the Anclote boat ramp in Tarpon Springs. Thats 30 miles over land. Granted it was fuzzy.... on high power the recorded playback of my transmission was clear as a bell. I could NEVER to that with my Shakespeare.

Newbie question......do you think the Gam antenna with the side adapter would be sufficient for use on a 19-6 that will generally be a bay boat or just a few miles offshore? If cut to the 40" for VHF, seems a long shot from 8'. Do I need to hunt an extension? Present antenna is mounted on side of console and only 4'.
Thanks for any guidance!

Yes it will be plenty.... keep in mind the electrical part of an 8' VHF antenna is NOT actually 8'. Only the fiberglass housing is. The length of the actual antenna element inside matches a fraction of the actual radio frequency wave size. Marine VHF radios operate in the 2 meter band... so one half of the 2 meter frequency is about 40" long. The 8' fiberglass is a dipole antenna.... meaning,. yup there are two poles.... one positive and one negative (ground).... so inside that 8' fiberglass antenna is a wire going up 40" for the positive side of the radio frequency wave and a 40" wire going down for the ground portion of the radio wave. The Gam has a loaded coil for the ground so you only have the positive portion of the antenna.... of course the taller a VHF antenna is the better... but a few feet either way won't make much difference. On my 170 I have a stainless whip antenna that is clamped to the windshield grab rail... it's not a Gam but it works pretty good.

The tech tested the existing Shakespeare antenna, it was bad.

Ordered the GAM SS-2 and ADAP-II kit.

Bruce, which brand extension did you go with? Thanks

Ummm Scott.. you know I have had both a fiberglass extension and a stainless steel extension. The 4' extension on Reel Crazy is a stainless one. Not sure if it is a Shakespeare or not... all it is is a beefy 1" stainless steel tube that is threaded on each end. I have to tell you the look of that tube mounted on a stainless ratchet mount on top of my hard top is... wait for it.... "DELUXE!" :)
