So I purchased my boat and did not know it had an auto pilot installed, nor did the seller. I found the pump and ECM and started investigating. Last weekend I found the AP remote (Wireless remote, no control panel). Opened that bad boy up and acid from battery leakage and ruined springs on batteries and the connector on circuit board. Priced a new remote at $350 and thats a huge risk not knowing if the Auto pilot even works. So I took the remote to a friend who owns a TV repair shop and he fixed it for me for $20!!!!

Now I get to test tomorrow night if the AP unit works!! Crossing fingers.

I dont believe the owner was using it because its a Raymarine s100 (low end basic AP), which requires GPS coords from some other electronics with old NMEA. The boat has a raymarine A78 but does not support this and the AP isnt connected to it in any way. Looks like old unit was removed and wires cut.

So I wanted a second FF/Chartplotter and ran across a deal on Ebay for a Raymarine A95 $1400 Retail, ebay $625, open box. I snagged it up because it has the old NMEA output on it! So now I will have a 7 and 9 inch raymarine chart plotter/ fish finder combo and im going to link them together. Hopefully I will have a working auto pilot as well.

I have someone cutting me some starboard in black 1/2 to fit over my current dash where the electronics fit. I am going to test mount it, the rotozip out about everything but one inch around the edge, and a 1 inch support in the center. Then mount the starboard, with screws from behind so there will be no mounting holes, Seal from inside with 5200. Use the rotozip to cut out the templates for 2 raymarines and VHF radio...

Project one underway!

I'm not trying to be Debbie downer here, but typically when an AP is not listed during a sale (when the OP bought the boat), it's no longer functioning. Does it have the old-fashioned potentiometer mounted to the steering cylinder?

I have a Raymarine S1000 wireless autopilot brand new in the box that came with my 22-2 when I bought it that I will never use. I'm assuming it is at least 15 years old. It's sitting in my china cabinet. Has manuals, remote, everything, brand new NOS. Will trade for old clean freshwater Merc 4-20 hp or 3-25 hp OMC through 1976. Does not have to run.

Just finishing up working on the boat in the rain. Hard top comes in handy. Tested out the auto pilot and it does connect and move the motors. Currently doesn't fully work because it has no gps source. I believe the previous owner replaced the chartplotter and didn't hook the autopilot back up to the unit because the raymarine a78 connected now does not have the old Nmea support. I am correcting that with a raymarine a95 I just had arrive today (eBay find for $600, but the power cable that came with its wrong, have a new one tomorrow to make sure the unit works).

After testing the AP, I tore out the sea star teleflex. Wow was that fun to get out, replaced all the seals in the teleflex due to leak and bumpy steering. Everything is out back together I just need to place in the boat tomorrow morning and rebleed the system. Hopefully bumping steering is gone. Can't install the new raymarine unit until my starboard dash arrives early next week.
