Guys just got back from the Miami boat show and wanted to pass info on this new product along. It's an sos distress strobe light that takes the place of flares that have to be replaced every few years. Just check the user replaceable batteries annually and you are coast guard compliant,Corey, I would appreciate your feedback on this,

The show price was the same as the west marine price,so I will wait till I need flares before I buy one.

i like it. we can see strobe lights from damn near 30+ miles away at night. even in the middle of the day a strobe light in the middle of white caps is a bit difficult to see, but so can a flare. sos signal would help though. other than a plb i would say this is the best thing you can "have on you". but thats the key it has to be attached to you, or really close to you. 100$ is not a bad price either. you can check it before every trip out too, unlike flares. i would say it cant hurt to have 1 attached to a main life jacket or a throwable.

I saw this in the latest West flyer and it certainly looked interesting

Only approved for night use, but my major issue is limited visibility due to low horizon height. One advantage of aerial flares is they get up 200-300 feet, and you can see them from much further away than you will see a strobe on your t-top. The horizon visibility from a t-top is only going to be about 3 miles, while at 250 feet you get about 20 miles of visibility. If I'm in trouble at night, I want that 20 miles instead of 3.

It does come with a distress flag for daytime use to make you coast guard compliant, I will probably still carry flares, but I won't have to worry about them being out of date.

Like any safety gear I'd say that adds another layer of safety. For offshore use it is a good addition to aerial flares but not a replacement.
