Putting holes in a boat for speakers and where can be a nerve racking job for some, let's post some pics of where ours are mounted to help others down the road.

I just bought a stereo. This is a great time for this post. Also, where do you guys mount the head units? I've been thinking about mounting mine inside so it can locked in.

That's not a bad idea but does the head unit have a remote you can mount on the helm?

I started with a head unit in here in the grey box
Image

Ended up moving it here, like it much better

Instead of cutting holes int the boat I used the pie plates, stereo and speakers are 5 years old now and still work

No, there was no remote for that stereo but I'm returning it. I plan to upgrade. I want something that I can mount 6 speakers to so I can also have 2 speakers in the cuddy.

James, I'm sure you know this, but if not...speakers are the key to the sound of your system. I am a firm believer in Infinity speakers, just got these in this morn for the rear deck of the Maxima...

Image

They will be replacing Infinity Reference series, as the Kappa is the next step up. I have to stay with the specialty size (5 1/4") to keep the install looking totally stock.

What's great about Infinity's (and any good speaker) is there sensitivity, measured in db's. The higher db measure, the more sound you get from the same given power input. Thus, at low levels of power, you get clean, crisp sound without having to crank the volume. That is the number I look at when buying speakers. Now Scott knows the Max is not lacking for power (2000W Pyle 6-channel amp in the trunk!), but I like having the sound I want at low levels of power.

What I recommend is a relatively inexpensive head unit with the best speakers you can afford. With no separate amp, you'll want a head unit with at least 40W X 4 channels. And for 6 speakers (2 bridged), you'll want a head unit with 2 sets of pre-outs...

The head unit in my 245 Explorer is mounted in the cabin on the aft port wall:

Scott,
I picked this pair up from an outfit called bargainsunlimited on ebay. Love Infinity's, got them installed this aft and they sound great!! Paid $80 for the pair shipped, and they got here in 3 days. http://www.bargainunlimited.net/servlet/Categories

Don't let the Euro sign full you, they're in Texas...

I just put a stereo in my boat. You can find some good deals on Poly Planar stereos if you shop around. I bought a MR41 Cpak which can be found for around $100. bucks. It contains everything you need. Head unit, spray cover, and two marine speakers. You can hook up four speakers to the head unit, and they also have a small separate add on amp for two additional speakers.

There is also good good deals on the separate head/tuner models, but they do not have speakers.

As far as cutting holes in your boat, just use the template and carefully mark the location with a Sharpie. Then drill a starter hole and cut it out with a sabre saw. make sure you have the proper clearance behind the mounting location, and no wires or other cbstructions.

Super easy to install the factory harness was right at each location. The only wire I had to run was the battery constant on power for the radio memory. There even wires for rear speakers.

Good morning Aquasport Boat Club. Hope everybody enjoyed the Gonzaga game last night. Anyway, has anyone heard of Pyle Marine Stereo Products? And better yet, anybody ever had a Pyle Stereo. I'm a big Amazon shopper and there are a lot of Pyle combo sets being sold on Amazon--Thanks

Pyle and Boss make quite a few marine radios and speakers. I have always felt they were low quality radios, but others may differ.

Agreed....but they offer decent sound for a low price. Remember, it's all about the speakers!
