Post subject:  Steering Wheel Leaking Oil

Hello, I have a 1995 Aquasport 225 Osprey. We have noticed that the steering wheel is leaking a small amount of oil when it is being used. When we purchased the boat about 6 months ago the steering had to be resealed and refilled with oil and we thought maybe the oil under the steering wheel was some left over from that job. With the weather getting better and now able to take it out on the water a few times we have started to notice it continues to come back as the steering wheel is being used. After a day worth of use I would estimate the amount of oil leaking is less than a thimble. It flows down to the switches below the wheel but there isn't enough gathering for it to drip to the floor. Does anyone have any experience with an issue like this? What would be my best bet to find the leak? Also any help with how to properly remove the steering wheel so that I can take a look there.

Thanks

Sounds like it is time your hydraulic helm pump is rebuilt. The fluid should be filled to the top of the cap. Also make sure your cap is the newer style with the tiny little vent in it. I think you can get a seal kit for it. You might be better off just contacting http://www.boatsteeringrebuilders.com/

I had the same problem on mine. The older ones seem not to reseal very easily. I actually had to tighten more with some channel locks. Careful not to over tighten but that worked for me. If you think it's tight enough and still leaking then maybe a seal kit is warranted as suggested above.

Teleflex helm?

Ironically I just ordered the shaft seal kit for my upper helm. My upper helm always spews some fluid out of the vented cap when the tower is folded down. Recently I have noticed that it happening more frequently and the amount of fluid to clean up is larger. I am waiting on the kit, simple job to replace. Good luck with your repair.
