Thank's to Pete who pioneered this fix, all of you with 225/245/250 Ospreys and Explorers can once and for all solve your fishbox drain issues with an added bonus of ease of access to your bilge pump, float switch, and shut-off valve!

Edit by Pete, fish box drain pics below, any questions please ask.....

I may have to do that mod. Did Pete reuse the factory pump?

Yep,re used the original pump,still works :1992_beer_cheer:
A better solution is to plumb in an actual macerator pump,as suggested by Bob,may do that if needed in the future, this a kind of a jury rig solution, but it works and didn't cost too much.Happy to answer any questions. :1992_beer_cheer:

There may be other ways to get this done,in my opinion the keys are the pie plate for access, drain moved to the bottom, and some sort of inline check valve to stop the water in the line from running back into the fish box as the thru hull is higher than the drain.

Pete,
I assume you just put the garboard drain into the hole the original pump was in? The PO of my boat put in a plastic deck fill fitting in the bottom of my fishbox as a drain that dumps into the bilge. So I would have to find a drain that will fit in that hole. The big pie plate is the huge benefit of this mod giving you great access to an otherwise unaccessable area.

I did mine too, it came out really nice.
I thought about doing a macerator pump too,
but down in the bilge I thought it would get rusty.
I could not find one that was for a "wet area".

Bryan, you may want to consider Whale's Toilet macerator pump. I was shown this pump a few years ago, a VERY impressive pump! One good thing is the pump body is made of aluminum and acetyl resin so it won't rust...http://www.whalepumps.com/marine/siteFi ... asheet.pdf

Thats a great pump only problem is its size and the way the hose hook ups are set up they are a little awkward. I am going to install it as soon as my Johnson macerator drops dead I have only been getting 2 seasons out of them but Johnson has replaced them twice at no charge but will not honor a replacement any more.

No offense to anyone who has a Johnson pump, if it has lasted, good for you. But in the OEM business, NOBODY worth their salt uses Johnson pumps. There is a reason they are so much cheaper than the competing brands...

Double Trouble, that is one BEAUTIFUL cabin! Also, I might try that fishbox drain fix at the end of the season.

Thanks Ja it was quite a bit of work and I enjoyed every minute of it working with wood is my passion and has been my trade my trade for 51 years. I started learning from an old carpenter that was a neighbor when I was 11 years old.

I had the same problem with my 205, the fish boxes would fill up with water, and MAYBE one would drain with a macerator pump, since one side would drain and start sucking water. My pump did rust. I looked at other options, then realized that it would drain with a bilge pump when under way, but I cant always remember to do it. I made a shower box and put a float switch in it. It fills up with water, the switch kicks on, drains the box (Just about .8 gallons) and creates a suction to draw more water out, and when underway allows it to fill up and drain again. Works great, used a bilge I had on hand, and cost about $6 to make using Sheet PVC, Plexi, and rubber weather strip.

I finally got around to installing a 8" pie plate in my fish box today. I used my pneaumatic body saw to cut out the 8 1/2" hole. Then I cleaned up the edges with a flap wheel in a die grinder. Here's a few pics of the steps:

Notice how thick the foam is. I was surprised at how dense the foam is.
