So most of us are here because we either own a boat or have owned a boat. So how did it start for you?

For me; i grew up on a 20ft regal cuddy cabin. i think my dad bought it new in 1989. we used to go up to the lakes in kentucky and find an island and camp for 10 days. load up the boat for everything we needed and just disappear. Boat was always well maintained. Moved to florida when i was 10 and we fished the crap out of it. the boat has made several trips to the bahamas, keys and all up and down the east coast of florida. He still has the boat to this day but she has seen some better days.

When i went into the military i needed a boat for myself. I didnt need an offshore boat or anything fancy. I picked up a 12ft john boat with a 9.9 Chrysler on my 19th birthday for 300$. it was a cool little boat but i wanted to make it cooler. Being a metal fabricator/ structural repair guy for my job i picked up a sheet of .90" aluminum. The boat was repainted in olive drab and carpet was laid on top of the aluminum decking. I only have 1 pic as it was years ago and i didnt quite know about photobucket. i got offered 1500$ for the boat shortly after my son was born and decided to take it.

i started off with one of them walmart 8 ft inflatables and a 12 volt trolling motor when i was 8, fished up and down the canals in my neighborhood all day. when i was 10 i got a 11 ft zodiak(plywood floor) and a 2 hp evinrude, sold that, got a 12 ft v hull jon boat and a 6 hp e'rude when i was 11. traded the e'rude for a 15 hp e'rude, that thing flew with just 2 kids! fished all around weedon, ft desoto, we'd take that little boat anywhere 3 gallons would get us. sold that and bought a 16 ft bonita flats boat when i was 14. during that time my dad had a 1981 Cobia 24 Caribbean that was fully restored... sold the bonita to buy my first car (my F150) when i was 17. from 15 to 19 i used my dads searay. he kept it at the marina where i work now and the guys couldnt believe how a 15-16 year old can dock a 28 ft twin screw boat better than 90% of the other marina members, its how i got the job there!! i worked in the marina for 2 years, dad had moved the boat to our house on a trailer, i moved to colorado for a summe/fall(2008). shortly after moving back, i went back to work at the marina, and i needed my own boat, so i bought my 200 osprey(march '09) then i bought my F250 in june '12 and in Oct '12, bought my flat back...

and one great thing about being at the marina for so long, i have a list of boats i can use at any time:
18 sea craft 150 jonrude
20 angler bay 150 yammy 4s
21 seaboss bay 150 merc opti
23 wellcraft coastal 225 jonrude
23 proline walkaround 200 yammy
26 south wind(deck boat w/ 300 zuke)
29 proline express(when the boat is at the marina) twin 225 vrod's
36 contender triple 250 yammy's

not bad for someone who's only 25 years old :1992_beer_cheer:

Welll.....

Growing up 8 miles from Lake Michigan, I guess the "early" years started with a couple little tinnies when we wanted to fish for lake perch, and a 30-something of friend of my Dad's for going offshore (yes, in Lake Michigan, you go offshore!) for Coho Salmon. Then my folks went in halfsies on a little cottage WAY up in Wisconsin in Door County on Sturgeon Bay. Whaler 13s EVERYWHERE!! We had 2 of them, both with 9.9 Mercs, us kids (there were 4 of us between the 2 families) went all over the coves and inlets around the bay...cold, cold water, even in the summer. My Dad's buddy had like an 18' tinny (could've been a Lund, Crestliner, who knows) that was the BIG boat, we'd go out into the middle of the bay with that thing.

Moved to Orlando when I was 20-21, picked up a 12' Jon with another 9.9 Merc, little bugger was excellent for bass and specks in all the lakes around O-Town (there's a shitload of them!). Had an old HB flasher on it that I got pretty good with. Then moved up to a 14' V glass hull with a 25 Merc on it that was pretty sweet, raised decks fore and aft. Then, in trade to pay a guys moving van expense, I got a 16' Astro bass boat with a 40 horse Evinrude on it...excellent little boat! Then I fell into a 17' Ski Nautique with a tired old 302 Ford in it, knew a guy who owner a junk yard, he got me a pretty fresh 302 for like $350, swapped that out, we had a lot of fun skiing a bunch of different lakes (yes, sometimes with gators, it's inevitable...). Then I got married...BIG mistake!!

I've been on boats since my dad has his 33 searay with my playpin in the back. I grew up in and around boats. Most memorably in a 1984 24 P&D and a 1987 26 Formula. The formula is currently for sale and breaks my heart a little. It's badass and i love it. The absolute perfect island boat. But the old man is getting too old for it. He is looking for a 28 hydrasport now. my 200 is the first boat of my own.

Aaron, I pretty much did all my stuff by 27 years old. Then the wife came along, then the kid. Out went the '67 Chevy C-10 with a 327 FI Vette motor, out went the Astro, out went the Nautique...and she STILL bankrupted us!!! sAng_scream sAng_scream sAng_scream

Corey, this was typical of the ex-wife...

Say we needed some cleaning stuff...you know, a couple brushes, maybe a new pail, tops, $20. I go get it, that's what I come back with. She goes and gets the SAME $20 worth of supplies, she gets home 2 hours later and asks if I can go unload the car. Unload...the car? The whole fricken hatchback is full of bags, probably $300 of stuff...on my CC!!

MORE GRRRRRRRRR...............

Igrew up on the water. Sail boats, bass boats, you name it. Then in recent years I tried my hand at kayak fishing. From the kayak it was a 12 foot Sears and Roebuck vhull skiff from 1976 that I fully restored based on YouTube videos lol. Now I have the Hydra. Its all a progression though, isn't it?

My dad always had boats, sailboat when I was born, 19 ft Seacraft later on,Wellcraft Skip jack, a Bertrum, a long line boat and now a Cobia but It started for me with a friends canoe, we were on it in the creek when I found my 10 ft john boat, then got a 7 hp Eska from a neighbor for free sHa-shakeshout I was in hog heaven, later on I moved up to a 14 John with a 15 hp Johnson, we sunk that off Siesta Key bridge, 3 fat kids in the boat and a big boat wake did us in sSa_cry4 we were able to salvage the boat but the motor was toast, all I could afford was a trolling motor so I went with that for awhile.

Then I got married and wanted a real boat and Mary was all for it, so we got a new 93 17 ft Cobia with an 85 Yamaha, used the hell out of it for a few years then after Josh was born I wanted bigger so I bought a 95 204 Angler with a 150 Mariner (biggest piece of shit motor ever) so with the combination of again wanting a bigger boat and the shitty motor I bought my 97 Explorer brand new and have had it ever since, during all this time with the Aquasport I have always had some kind of small boat, mostly Johns till I found my 14 Panga in 06 which I still have and doubt I will ever get rid of.

The 25 does fine with just me in it which is the way it is most of the time these days but another 10-15 hp with remotes and tnt would be kick ass.
