Yesterday the continuation of lower unit break in was pretty uneventful. I put another two hours on the motor, which means I've done 6 hours now on it. This is huge, because the boat plains at 3500 rpm, and 4000 is pretty much 75% of wot. I hit wot a couple times for a second or two as the instructions said, and I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary. Little bit of noise from the lower around 3000rpm, but it went away by the end of the day.

I stopped in the channel north of Anclote to see what kind of big fish would hit the remaining 30 pin fish I had. I killed the motor and drifted. Motor didn't start. I saw voltage drop, but knowing that I've had to replace the solenoid a few times, I tried jumping it. Nothing. Took a pocket knife and rapped on the starter. Started fine. Turned it off and on at the ramp a few more times, no issues. I'm still going to the 28th, but I think I'm going to order one. Hell, VRO pump, lower unit, why not a starter right?

Cheap ones and OEM. What to get?

Carl, go with an ARCO starter. Made in Pensacola. I believe your starter is OMC P/N 0586890, which would be ARCO P/N 5387. Should be able to get it for a little over $150...

Speaking of starters.. I have one (basically new) but does not work. Long story short - it stems back to when I first purchased my Osprey and the starter went out a week later. Anyway, the shady and worthless mobile mechanic I was using at the time took it off and had it re-built but it died soon after with only 3-5 starts under it's belt when I was out of town with my boat down south in Anna Maria over a holiday weekend. I found a replacement at West Marine (did a price match online so I didn't get raped) and I put it in myself and it's worked flawlessly ever since and it's been over two years now. As for the other I have... I was wondering if you guys know of an outfit here in Tampa or Pinellas that rebuilds them. I'd like to get it fixed to have a spare in the event that the one in my boat now goes out. Right now it's just collecting dust..

That's a great idea Bruce, I think I'll do the same thing with mine. I really need to get a spare solenoid and keep it in the boat as well.

Check with Will's starter and alternator in Kenneth City. My second choice would be John at Advanced starter and Alternator in Clearwater.

I don't think it is going to be that difficult to fix. Just so dang hot outside... makes it miserable to work on.

Bruce, I just came in to take a little break from the Spectre...taking her all apart. I'm about to climb in the engine room, lay down on those Yanmars, get the AP rudder angle sender cut loose and the hell out of there.

Looks like the cable is ty-wrapped in about 100 places... :1898_:

Sounds like nothing more than cleaning the commutator and fitting new brushes. Tricky but if you mark the casing and end caps for position on reassembly and make a thin plastic plate with a slot in it to fit around the spindle, you can do it. The plastic plate is to hold the brushes in place against the springs when to put the cap assembly back. Once located you slide the plastic out allowing the brushes to locate on the commutator.

James, I'm okay with electrical stuff, but I'm not okay enough to skip the $150, do it myself, and trust it 20 miles off shore. The places quoted around $100-$140 to rebuild, and I can get the Arco for about $175 shipped, or a different brand for $145. I'll probably go with one of those options. One day, I need to get a better antenna for my VHF too!

I like the arco. The last two I've had to replace, have been them. One was on my 175 and the other for a friends motor. Got a dealer that sales them right up the road. So I get them off the shelf. I can't beat the price, at least not locally.

Saw that a company called db electrical is selling a starter for my boat at $90 shipped. Not really seeing anything negative on them. Have you guys ever used one before?

DB Electrical shipped me my starter and I got it the day after I ordered it. $91 shipped, and was put on within a few minutes of getting it. Started great, and carries the same warranty as the Arco. The last starter was a no name, and installed March of 2011, so it lasted about 3 years. If I get the same out of this, I'd say it's a win at the price I paid.

The DB starter went out yesterday. Not a great thing as I had to get towed in from the storm. Sucks most for the 8 other people I had with me, including a guy who already doesn't like boats lol. Oh well. That's why I pay for Boat US. Going to call DB and moderately complain. Will advise!

They took $10 off, and are shipping me out another one to have in a few days. Not bad for $80 shipped. I'd still say it's a good enough deal.
