I have the same set up and some time ago found a degraded main negative cable was the cause not pushing the bendix to fully
engage the fly wheel (high pitch whine)

Well I charged both batteries all the way over the last two days, then used a jump box, which didn't make the pinon engage, and then I jumped it off my truck, it turned fast, but didn't engage. Any suggestions? Here's the wiring now from the side of the boat. Maybe you guys see something that's broken. Pictures of the flywheel are on the previous page. I still can't figure out how to really pull start it. Kind of frustrating trying to figure out why the pinon isn't engaging. All the wiring appears to be fine, so I have no idea what I'm supposed to look for.

Try calling Acme Auto & Marine Starters on Madeira beach. Also I can get you a price on a new one thru Pro Marine if you like. If the bendix is not coming out something is wrong.

To pull start it tie a knot in the end of a rope (nothing too fat say 3/8" max diameter). Tuck the knot into one of those triangular shaped vents (I'd pick one at around the 8:00 position) and then wrap the rope around the flywheel clockwise on top of itself say two times.... So the loose end of the rope is at about 2:00 position. Then pump the primer bulb, make sure the key is on and it's in neutral and pull on the rope in one swift contentious pull. DONT WRAP THE ROPE AROUND YOUR HAND OR WRIST! Even better tie a dowel or something on the end to make a handle.

Edit: Whoops forgot about the key.

Bruce left out one important instruction; turn the key to the on position then pull the rope.

Are my wires crossed on this starter? I'm wondering if I accidentally put the output from the solenoid on the wrong post on the starter...

Is this the starter you thought was going bad or the new starter?

New one. Right now the starter is turning clockwise, lol. I think I might have inadvertently somehow put them on backward.

Well since it's the new starter it's possible that the old starter was not the problem. You stated that you charged the batteries, have you load tested them?

I have not load tested the batteries. I did use my truck to jumpstart the boat though, which I can't really imagine not having had enough power... Is the flywheel supposed to turn clockwise or counter clockwise from looking down at motor from top?

Yup, I forgot to update. I swapped wires the other day and it worked great. Batteries are holding a charge, so I'm really not too sure what the main issue was other then a pinion gear needing some lube, weak batteries, and the solenoid randomly going bad. I checked the charging and it's between 1.4/1.7v, so it's definitely charging them. I think the one battery is bad, and it's sucking the life out of the good one. I'm going to go scalloping Monday if the weather doesn't suck, so I'll figure out what's going on then.

yeah if you have a bad battery leaving it on both will drain them both down.
