New member, I have a 1998 225 aquasport explorer and I broke the cardnel rule--I let it sit for a very long time. The motor hasn't been run for over a year. I have a 250 fitch on it now and I can't find anyone who will touch it to service or repair. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth the effort and expense to service/repair the motor I have or if it's time to repower it. I've looked at both a used yamaha 250 4 stroke and a new suzuki 250. Looking for suggestions, opinions and past experiences. Any help is appreciated.

When it’s running right its great! In the past couple of years I have neglected it due to high fuel cost and moving and remodeling the new house. It’s an Evinrude Fitch and I bought it from my fishing buddy who had it on his Proline. He had it suck in a reed valve and had it warranted by Lombardy with the upgraded power head. I am told that’s a good thing but it still has some issues with the brain box. At present I am going to replace the fuel lines and check the filters and see what happens. The last time I ran it I had a engine lite come on and I checked the fuel line the local mechanic installed and when I pulled it off the guts of the fuel line ran out onto my foot. I replaced that fuel line and when I started it than that’s when the engine light came on that’s when I stopped messing with it. Years ago I rebuilt a merc 50hp and a 48hp evinrude with good results so I am ok with the basics on it. The plugs are unreal on this motor if there not perfect it doesn’t work. My plan before I drop 18k on a 98 boat I am going to start with replacing all the fuel lines from the fuel tank to the motor and check all the filters and fuel pump. I am told to flush out the fuel tank and check it out but not sure how to check it I am looking to get a wall camera scope to look inside the fuel tank if that will work. Time wise no big rush I am still in the middle of the home addition. Black Crown and diet coke is my drink and I mix it heavy.

sounds like all your problems are fuel related- and you have a good game plan of starting with the simple/obvious stuff first- before going to the trouble of replacing all your fuel lines and messing with the tank in the boat- try a 3 or 6 gallon portable tank hooked to your motor with fresh fuel. that can eliminate a big section of your problems if it runs ok... but as you mentioned: change the plugs, filters, and anything else the fuel may have touched on the motor before you start it... I don't know a ton about that particular motor, and I'm sure other can contribute if they know better- but anytime a motor has been sitting that long, it may be a good idea to see if you can manually move the pistons under hand power before you use the full force of a motor and bend/break something. (meaning- maybe add some oil in the cylinder heads and let that soak in there a couple days, then use a wrench on the fly wheel to manually turn the motor before you crank it over with full starter power. (you didn't mention if its primarily used in saltwater or fresh so make sure all your shafts and connections are clean of corrosion and moving properly)

your lower unit will need some attention as well- new water pump and fluid and seals.

regarding your boat's fuel tank- I had mine cleaned out a few years ago- I started with a simple search on the local Craigslist- they usually charge by a "per gallon washed". The guy who did mine had a mobile service with the machine in a trailer he towed around. he was able to use a camera to look in the tank afterwards and check for damage/holes/debris. (simply draining your tank yourself wont be good enough as the old fuel will form a varnish-like slime that will bond to the interior of the tank- that will then mix with the new fuel and you'll be in the same problem on a fresh tank of gas- the "washing" the services provide can dislodge that slime and give you the best chance at a clean start).

Salt water fishing out of Yankey Town where it runs though fresh water up the river back to the ramp that run is about a hour plus at a no wake. Plus fresh water running at the house. If you can find the number for the gas tank washer that would be great. I need to do this eather way.

What year is the ficht?

The fuel injection system is a closed system on those. The injectors are very sensitive to any trash in the system. You may watch to look into pulling the injectors and having them cleaned. And cleaning out the vst and injector fuel lines.

The ficht became the red headed step child to the brp dealers but there is a aftermarket industry that has sprung up to support them. This includes injector cleaning and service and EMM repair and service. The 2000 and up ficht motors are good reliable motors.

Where are you located?

Yes the 245/250 has two more feet of rear deck space between the steps and the rod holders than the 225.

FYI I have a 2005 250 Etec with 103 hours on it I will be selling soon. Will hook right up to your existing rigging.

honestly i would get rid of the ficht. i had an 05 150 on my last boat. the motor ran great, ill give it that. but the ecu tried to smoke check its self one day. after that i just sold the whole boat. the newer styles 2000 and up have a lot of the problems figured out but they still are known to have issues with the ecus. heres what i ran into with mine, good thing i was at the dock

Not to be a negative Nancy on the Ficht motors as well but as soon as they start giving you crap they never stop. Mine would start cold super easy. Shut it down for a drift and a couple times took me like 45 min to get her going again. So glad that boat is gone. The Ficht is why I sold it. Kinda glad because now I'm in the 245 explorer and love my 250 Zuke. The first time that old Ficht costs some real cash to fix trash it.
