The gear wouldn't change except for fresh 17 lb. hi-vis on the reels, #30 fluorocarbon tied on between line and leader. And instead of 40 lb. snap swivels we'd go with Spro 100 lb. test black mini swivels.

Ditch that little yellow beater Eagle Claw rod and go with some pricier stuff I have here at the house. Those blue rods we were using were custom-built Loomis live bait fast-taper graphite blanks with Fuji carbaloy guides and Fuji graphite seats. Had them built 15 years back when times were good. Ready to go there.

And maybe we could borrow those roller sailfish rods of Lewis's. They were sweet.

The reels are tried and true Daiwa 250's and 30SH's from the eighties and nineties. 5 and 6 to 1 retrieve. Maybe would pick up a couple of Shimano TLD 20's. But really no need. We caught big momma on everyday gear..... and we were just fun fishing, catch and release.

It's more stealthy presentation than anything. And an educated thumb. That's why we didn't use skirts. IMHO big kings don't get big by hitting skirts. Pogy only, natural look. Especially when its as calm as it was.

Bang on, well done.
Remember though, that little beater reel landed you a nice one.
The gear was perfect for us.

Yeah but hose are the star drag ones. The ones in the thread are lever drag. The guy thats selling them is known as kraw2 on CAS. Really nice guy and does a great job rebuilding reels.

Man...what a weekend!!

The big king shown and released was in the low to mid 30's. Would estimate around 34 pounds.

We lost a heavier one that hit wide open off the bat...was Bryan's fish, would like for him to give the skinny sHa_clap2

What a weekend! Still high on life with that magic bite!!

Took the big Contender out first light. Pretty day, but still a decent big swell from the Bermuda hurricane. She nonetheless ran 51 mph straight into it 68 miles due SE off the beach.

We were looking to cream 'em. But SLOW for everyone out there on a Monday morning. We were pretty spread out, but the captains all knew each other. Only thing was, the bite was OFF. No birds, no flying fish, no weedlines....nothing. It was a desert. And Monday morning, its not exactly the weekend. No radio chatter. Only four boats fishing the shelf, spread out SW/NE over 15 miles.

And it was DEAD.

To add insult to injury....we had a very experienced crew. With two licensed Captains aboard.

Finally....shotgun goes off. I'm on the rod, and this fish is shittin' and gettin' . Runs off 300 yards right now....and even when it stops, its still slowing peeling line.

After a strong and lengthy fight....in she comes. 56 pound wahoo sHa-shakeshout

We had a couple more....pics tomorrow.

Someone please loan me $455,000. We need a brand new 39 Contender Super Sport!!!! Ran home at 59 mph, hit 69 in the ditch with trip 350 Yammies.

Man!!
