OK I know it is WAY early but July will be here before we know it! Last years Scallopfest was a huge hit! Having had a good practice run last year I'm sure we can make it even better this year!

Lets start looking at dates that will allow out of the area members to make it down!

What about the weekend of July 25th?

We've been talking about this around here for awhile, the 25th sounds like a good date to me, that will give me some time in between that and my keys trip

Looking forward to it!

Scott and I were talking last year about a change in accommodations, for several reasons. Number one, we never felt like we all got together as a group. We were either on separate boats, rooms, etc., eating apart, cleaning scallops apart, etc. So we were thinking about renting a canal-front house so we could all hang together. Plus the a/c units at the motel sucked. As did the staff.

Renting a house has worked great for several years up here for Octoberfest.

Another thing we were thinking about was how much time it took to clean the damn things. Next year, lets just take them over to the Homosassa dock and pay to have them cleaned...it ain't much. I don't know about you guys, but my vacation time is worth more than ten bucks an hour.

What do you guys think about renting a big house with our own docks? From what I remember from the rental mags, they went pretty darn cheap by the week.

I'm all for due diligence on a better place to stay that will also allow for a more social gathering, but lets clarify on the points you have made above.

1) We were eating apart in part because we were not prepared. Once we arrive we must have all we need for the stay, driving to the grocery store to get items for dinner or breakfast must all be done before we arrive to ensure that we are not losing time to running errands. The place we stayed had ample room for a group dinner, just need to plan better.

2) Remember we did not leave the dock until almost noon as we were waiting on one member to sell an item to another member who was driving from over three hours away. Although this was the right thing to do, it can not happen again, as that set us back a minimum of three hours. If we make a plan and stick to the plan, leave the dock no later than 9 am, there will be ample time to clean the scallops, break bread together as a group, and make fun of Dookie!

3) Question for you Dookie, I mean Scotty. If the intention is to spend more time together as a group, please tell me how driving what?, 30-40 minutes one way to Homosassa, waiting 4-5 hours to have your scallops cleaned, driving 30-40 minutes back to Hernando is going to accomplish said intention? Not to mention all this after a few adult beverages, its just not a good idea IMO. Besides cleaning the scallops allows for the group to spend time together, and for the record you did not clean very many scallops anyways. :1143_neener_neener_neener:

I look forward to hearing the opinions of others.

#3

From what I have read, you pull the boat up to the cleaning dock on the way back in, drop them off, and pick them up the next day. And you're right, I was not as fast as you on cleaning them. But the time invested was the same.

And yep, it was fun....for the first couple hours.... sFun_eyescan

The best option is to get an early start and just have however is not diving clean the scallops on the boat. I can tell you the mess is easier to clean up, you get to keep more scallops and it's easier to bring back a few Tupperware containers than a huge heavy cooler!

I couldn't agree more with Nando's assessment. Defined roles, expectations and organization is the key to a pleasant experience. These excursions are also about sweat equity. Washing the boat, gear, fix what broke, shucking ,supplementing fuel costs and whatever else pops up on the list, including lots of sweat, being tired and ready to relax. Just like when we were kids; we need to get our chores done before the socializing begins. That said, the accommodations could have been better, just finding a garden hose that wasn't kinked flat or full of holes was a challenge and the AC was just one notch above a warm tropical breeze! So you live, learn and adapt. And yes, Nando can out shuck us 3-1 but you stay there until it's done!

Scotty, that house you posted looks nice! Bruce and I were discussing and the problem we see with that is that it only sleeps 12, we had more heads than that last year and I would anticipate the head count increasing this year. I have given this some thought and another option would be the Plantation Inn in Crystal River but then we would lose the ability to cook our own meals as this is a Hotel with a restaurant and bar. And yet another option would be Steinhatchee which is considerably further north and would be a haul for those of us trailering our boats. After many years of doing this, IMO the place we stayed works great. Granted the A/C sucks and as Farley mentioned the hoses on the dock also are less than desirable. But both of those issues can be resolved, I would not be opposed to renting a portable A/C unit for our room and as far as the hose on the dock goes I was aware of that problem before and had just forgot to bring a hose from the house as I was rushing to get on the road. Look forward to opinions.

Thanks guys. The last thing I wanted were for my comments to be construed as some type of personal criticism, on my word that was not the case.

The main thing was the A/C, our place seemed to be quite a bit hotter than some of the others.

Whatever you guys choose is great by me, thanks for having me, it is an awesome experience.

I'm finally back to the land of internet so my turn, myself I like were we stayed but I'm always open to new ideas.

The problem last year, besides the AC was no itinerary which we (WILL HAVE THIS YEAR) and a lack of communication, people just did their own thing which led to some of us cleaned up and eating by 8 and other still cooking at 11, this year if someone wants to bail and go off on there own to do whatever and not stick to the plan so be it but it will be solely on them.
